Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening- VELScope in North York

During your oral examination, you might have noticed Dr. Rezvani or Dr. Ata looking around your mouth, even pulling your tongue from one side to the other. What are they looking for?

They are screening for Oral Cancer by looking for changes in the tissue.  At FinchEdith Dental Office, we are now using  VELScope –the latest in oral cancer screening technology for the well-being of our patients.

What does an Oral Cancer Screening do?

Screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage when it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread.

VELSCOPE Technology

VELscope Vx is an adjunctive screening device used to discover oral mucosal abnormalities. VELscope Vx facilitates the early discovery and visualization of abnormal tissue, including oral cancer. A VELscope Vx examination is fast, easy, painless, and does not require additional rinses or stains. The portable VELscope Vx handpiece emits a safe blue light, which excites fluorophores from the surfaces tissue to the membrane where premalignant changes typically begin.

In layman’s terms, it allows Dr. Rezvani or Dr. Ata to detect pre-cancerous changes under the surface of your gum tissue. At FinchEdith Dental Office, we recommend that people who smoke, chew tobacco or have any risk factor for oral cancer have a VELscope Vx screening completed yearly. Low-risk patients should have this done once every 2-4 years.
